Regional Impact: Today, Girl Scouts is, as it always has been, the organization best positioned to help girls prepare for their future roles in the workplace and community. Our programs are in response to our time-tested mission, namely, to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. In the Grand Forks area, Girl Scouts - Dakota Horizons is chartered by Girl Scouts USA to deliver programming to all interested girls from the time they enter kindergarten until they graduate from high school. The Girl Scout program links girls with their communities providing real-life experiences for them to discover their talents and express themselves in positive ways.
New research finds that Girl Scouts shine above their peers in leadership, academics, career aspirations and hope for the future. In a national survey of 3,014 girls (1,507 Girl Scouts and 1,507 non-Girl Scouts), 57% vs. 28% were more likely to exhibit community problem solving skills. Additionally, the Girl Scout program addresses social issues girls confront daily - from the classroom bully to threatening and harmful messages from social media. According to Child Trends, the development of attitudes, behaviors and skills like confidence, conflict resolution and problem solving are critical to a child's well-being. These and other issues are addressed in a safe and nurturing environment as girls explore topics to improve their daily lives.
With a full-time staff located in Grand Forks, the Girl Scout council provides year-round programming and member services.
Summary of Need:
The Girl Scout Service Center in Grand Forks is a hub of activity for girls to gather and share their passion as members of the world's largest girl organization. Located at 2525 Demers Avenue, the facility is operated by Girl Scouts - Dakota Horizons. The Girl Scouts Service Center makes it possible to host events for girls in the Grand Forks area on a year-round basis. The facility is also used extensively for troop meetings, volunteer training, and other program-related activities providing a safe, accessible, and convenient meeting place.
To accommodate the many requests for meeting space, we are in need of collapsible tables and chairs that can be easily moved to accommodate any size group or type of event. The approximate cost of this project is $2,000. Such a gift will greatly enhance the Girl Scout program in the Grand Forks area.
